My successes.

2017 was a banner year for Haines and HSS: they received a Govie Award from Security Today for their Risk Analysis methodology and a Platinum Best Homeland Security Education Program ASTOR Award from American Security Today. A year earlier, Haines was awarded the Security Industry Association Sandra Jones Volunteer of the Year Award and a Platinum Award for Excellence in Homeland Security.

However, Haines says, "the best reward has been the fact that we've been able to teach 35 percent more students this year on how to develop mitigation strategies that are effective in reducing risk to people and facilities."

How SCORE helped.

During the budget sequestration, Haines went to a SCORE workshop where he says he was asked questions about his business that he had never thought about before. Later, Haines received mentoring from Dan Fisher and Robert Tongen, who he says, “stuck with me even when there didn’t seem to be a sunrise on the horizon.”

Haines advises other small business owners: “Listen to your mentors.  The road is paved, stay on it.  Don’t go whacking down trees to create your own path.”

How Did Your Business Get Started?

The veteran-owned Haines Security Solutions (HSS) helps architects and engineering firms solve security engineering problems while reconciling confusing (and sometimes contradictory) regulations. Business owner Doug Haines and his team also provide risk-assessment consulting; drills and exercises for security teams; and training and certification in physical security engineering. At its core, HSS specializes in teaching building design principles to architects, engineers, facility managers, planners and security professionals around the globe.

Haines started his business in 2012 and, after some initial success, hit a roadblock: the 2013 federal budget sequestration. Haines says of that time: “I hit rock bottom. No money, no prospects. Fortunately my military background gave me skills that would help me: integrity, self-reliance, work ethic, perseverance.” That was also when Haines contacted SCORE.
